小麦等植物花中白色的硬壳，无显著的中脉和芒,外面有外稃包着

对植物的子房起到保护作用。

实质是，相当于形成小穗各外颖片腋部生长的枝，其上花柄基部的一对先出叶在近轴侧面愈合的结构。另外还有内颖、花颖等名称，较为纷乱。一般果实被内稃包覆得很紧，但裸麦（Secalecere-ale）籽粒容易从内稃脱出。
